First Timer’s Guide to Hashing

Welcome! If you’re reading this, you’re either brave, curious… or were promised a pint at the end. Good news: all three are valid reasons.

What is hashing?

Think of it as a cross between a run, a treasure hunt, and mild chaos—with a strong social (and hydration) element.

What should I bring?

  • Running shoes you don’t mind getting muddy
  • Clothes suitable for British weather (so… everything)
  • A sense of humour (mandatory)
  • Cash/card for the all-important post-run pint

Who are the “Hares”?

No, not actual rabbits.
The Hares are the masterminds who set the trail. They’ll give you a quick briefing at the start—pay attention, or at least look like you are.

How do I follow the trail?

You’ll be looking for marks on the ground (chalk, flour, the occasional “was that deliberate?” clue).

  • True trail: You’re going the right way
  • Check: Time to fan out and find the trail again
  • False trail: Congratulations, you’ve been tricked

If in doubt, follow someone who looks confident. If they’re wrong, at least you’re wrong together.

🏃 Runners or 🚶 Walkers

  • Runners’ Trail: Longer (4–5 miles), with built-in shortcuts so no one gets abandoned in a hedge
  • Walkers’ Trail: Shorter (2–2.5 miles), more relaxed, same finish line (and pub!)

No pressure, no racing—this isn’t the Olympics.

🗺️ Will I get lost?

Possibly.
Permanently? Unlikely.
That’s part of the fun.

What happens at the end?

Everyone ends up back at the pub where it all began. This is where:

Drinks are enjoyed

Lies about how far you ran are told

Heroic (and questionable) moments are relived

This is arguably the most important part of the evening.

😄 Final advice

  • Don’t take it too seriously
  • Don’t worry about speed
  • Do enjoy the chaos

If you finish with a smile (and a pint), you’ve done it right.

Welcome to the madness. You’ll love it. Probably.
